IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME!

How fast the weeks have sped along! It is already almost the middle of February, almost a year since our old pastor and his wife visited us from Canada. How can this be? If you are like me, you have probably employed the common expression, "How time flies!" Of course, as we grow older, we contemplate all the more the brevity of life, in light of this thought of time passing so quickly. Does this remind you of a hymn?

" Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day."

This is one of the stanzas of Isaac Watts' hymn, Our God, Our Help in Ages Past. Here is the complete version:

Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,

Thy Word commands our flesh to dust,

Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

There are a couple of stanzas that are new to me. Now, while all this talk of life ending might sound depressing at first, look at the focus of the hymn: OUR GOD, OUR HELP...OUR HOPE..OUR GUARD...OUR ETERNAL HOME. In light of the reality of the end of all mankind (death), this is really a song of encouragement. Life here may be fleeting in comparison to eternity, but then, there is eternity for those who are in Christ! It is also an exhortation to seek God while He may be found, to press into the kingdom! We cannot put off till another time the answer to God's call to repentance. Pray that God show you your heart, and then the face of the dear Savior, Jesus Christ. And do not forget...not all faith is saving faith. Intellectual faith is good, but "Salvation is of the Lord." (Jonah 2:9)

I have also been reflecting on the use of my time. While I must be busy doing what the Lord has called me to do, that being to mother my children, I must not neglect prayer and the study of His Word, else how can I really mother my children? It is not just a matter of "having devotions" or "doing my quiet time." God does not put a premium on ignorance! Reading, studying, and knowing His Word is all-important. While I am obviously not a preacher, this quote struck me, and inspires me to seek the Truth. Read what George Ricker Berry (1897)has to say to pastors:

"Within ten years the average man wastes more time in fruitless reading and indifferent talk, than would be used in acquiring a good working knowledge of Hebrew and Greek that in turn would impart to his teaching that quality of independence and of reliability which so greatly enhances one's power as a teacher.

There is not one minister in ten who might not if he but would, find time and opportunity for such study of Hebrew and Greek as would enable him to make a thoroughly practical use of it in his work as a Bible-preacher and Bible-teacher. "

What hit me was the first line, underlining the common predicament to which we so often succumb: "Within ten years, the average man [or woman, or child] wastes more time in fruitless reading and indifferent talk, than would be used in acquiring a good working knowledge of Hebrew and Greek...."

Pastor W. R. Downing explains in his volume, HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE, how important it is to have some understanding of the original languages. "There is absolutely no substitute for a knowledge of the original languages. No translation or version can equal the original languages of Scripture. There are three major reasons: first, a translation or version is necessarily in the grammar and idiom of the second language, and thus loses the inspired grammatical and syntactical constructions, nuances and emphases of the original language--and both doctrinal and practical truth often hinge on such. One must realize and remember that the grammar and syntax of text of the original languages are Divinely inspired. (Mat. 5:17-18; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:21)---that of any secondary language is not. Unless a translation or version is framed on the often inexplicable and ever foreign constructions and idioms of the original, it is necessarily to a given degree a paraphrase at best. Even the so-called "word-for-word translation" found in a Greek or Hebrew interlinear miserably fails to convey the grammar, syntax, nuances and idioms of the original. The English language by comparison is relatively bankrupt of expression as compared to either the Greek or the Hebrew. Thus, one may give an exegesis of the text in the original language, but only an exposition of the text in a translation of version. Second, our English Bible is not a translation, but a version of a translation, and so adheres much more to the secondary language with its peculiarities and limitations than to the original. This accounts for the continued publications of various "versions" of the Bible in the English language. Were any one of these versions the full, final word, others would not be necessary. Third, translation necessarily involves a given amount of interpretation and accommodation, and these are unavoidably colored by some degree of subjective misunderstanding, and also cultural, historical and doctrinal presuppositions." (How to Study the Bible, W.R. Downing, P.I.R.S. Publications, 2002, Appendix 1, Section 3, Point 6. page 199-200)

Now, you, like I, may not have a lot of time to pursue studies in Greek and Hebrew, but even a little "can go a long way" to help us understand the truth of Scriptures. An interlinear Greek and English New Testament such as George Ricker Berry's can be used for study and helps so much for understanding the original "lay out" of the verses. The internet provides many tools, as well, for this, and, as the above quotes by Berry indicate, we can, if looking for a church, inquire as to the knowledge of the pastor in these languages. I have learned so much from listening to godly preachers on Sermon Audio.

Of course, with a large family of 9 children, I don't have all the time in the world to read and to listen to sermons on my own. I thank God for the gift of the Lord's Day! When we arrive home from church, we all do our quiet times, if we have not had time to do so before services. Then, while the children read Christian books, I usually listen to a sermon, which I then share later with the whole family. I also gather all the children for a special time where I read books by Christian authors to them. Presently, we are going through Norm Wakefield's ANCHORED IN CHRIST for the second time. Often on Sunday evenings, I would read to the older ones from texts such as HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE or THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH which contain great revelations for us as the Greek and Hebrew are brought to light.

So....how are we spending our time? What are we reading on our own? What do we read with our children? On top of all the wonderful works of literature and the endearing bedtime stories, we need to be teaching them, grounding them in, the Truth of God's marvelous Word. This we all know. Beginning the day with the Bible is not a new concept, especially amongst homeschoolers. What about going more in depth by using the tools described above to learn some Greek, and maybe some Hebrew? I am challenged, and plan on getting more serious about how I invest my time. How about you?

This last statement is SO important. From A BAPTIST CATECHISM by W.R. Downing, we read this question and its subsequent answer. (Italics mine). "May the church involve herself in social affairs? Yes, but only if she does so with a gospel emphasis. God has not called the church to clean up unregenerate society, but to remain distinct from it. She exists as a spiritual sub-culture within a given society. The church's spiritual, moral, and ethnic powers are what give her the right and proper influence in society (1 Tim. 2:1-4). In times of revival, the moral climate of society has been greatly improved and heightened, and social institutions have been spawned through the efforts of godly people."

I believe that those involved in Romania Reborn are truly fulfilling this responsiblity by reaching out, not only in a physical way to love those with material needs, not only to fill emotional "tanks," but to bring LIFE to those whom they seek to love. LIFE in the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE MOTHER AT HOME

TRISH ROMANCE PRINT: LULLABY

It thrills my heart when I meet or read of young mothers who have made that all-important decision to remain at home to raise their children. Not only does this afford so many blessings to the mother, but, ultimately it glorifies God as it is in accordance with His world that women should be keepers at home. All of us who have obeyed this command have had many years full and overflowing with all the joys constant companionship with our children affords. We are there to see our little ones' first smiles, to hear their first words, and to witness their initial steps. Over time, we may teach them so much in the academic field....reading, arithmetic, printing, cursive, science, history.... However, the most important sharing comes around the Word of God.

After all, true wisdom is from God! In spite of all the uplifting moments, we must acknowledge that life with little human beings who are just as sinful as we are is not always easy. Pastors, their wives, other godly mentors, and timely advice through written volumes can all be used by the Holy Spirit to teach us how to be parents.

One little gem in the world of publications is this little book, THE MOTHER AT HOMEBy John S.C. Abbott, published 1833, 164 pages, paperback (I have one copy left to sell.)

Bringing to mind great men such as George Washington and John Newton, the author points to the influence of godly mothers. He then proceeds to exhort and encourage women to live up to the role that God has given them. To help them take on the responsibility of maternal authority, mothers are instructed, via examples of plausible real-life situations, to follow some basic principles of child-rearing, based on the Bible.

For example, “Never give a command which you do not intend shall be obeyed.” Following the enunciation of such a principle is a short anecdote portraying a conflict with a young child and how the situation is incorrectly handled by a mother who breaks the rule. Instead, an alternative scenario impresses upon us, through a play-by-play dialogue, the necessity to “say what you mean, and mean what you say.” Several other similar examples help mothers relate the truths given to their own situations today with their own children.

Another timely bit of advice is “Never think that your child is too young to obey.” The author is balanced in his views, however, understanding children’s limits and bents, and warns that we are to “ guard against too much severity.” He calls mothers to greet her little ones cheerfully, to show them love, to be mild and harmonious in speech, but to be firm in matters of disobedience. He warns against cultivating a loveless atmosphere where the children are always in fear of their parents’ ill temper, where the home does not radiate as a “happy retreat of peace and joy.”

This easy-to-read volume goes through difficulties mothers may face, and common errors we make, such as “continually finding fault,” and the fundamentals required to persevere in the all-important task of raising children in the nurture and admonition of God’s word.

In the chapter entitled Religious Instruction, this advocate of home learning stresses the need for mothers to invest in their children directly, and not to rely on outside classes or groups to instruct her children. He writes: “ It is, however, of the first importance, that the home should be the sanctuary of religious instruction…No one else [besides the mother] can possibly have the influence which a mother may possess, or the facilities which she enjoys. She knows the various dispositions of her children,; their habits of thought; their moods of mind…She is with them, when they are in sickness or pain. She can take advantage of the calm of the morning and of the solemn stillness of the evening.”

Further along in the book, specific helps are given as to the important aspects to underline in the spiritual teaching of the children. Parents are encouraged to be devoted to knowing the Scriptures, to prayer, and to the imitation of the apostles in preaching the Savior to their little ones.
Although written so long ago, this little publication is full of pertinent, enduring truths put forth to mothers in such a practical way, that I feel that the reading of it and due application of its godly principles will help families grow in the Lord and in their home schooling. It does not matter what age your children are…the benefits are far-reaching for all age groups, and motivate us to reach higher in our calling as mothers.

Let us not forget that though the responsibility is ours, it is only God who, by His grace, can change the heart. Beware of producing children who hold to standards only for keeping up appearances, for saving face. God looks at the heart. If we only desire the outward signs of a good "citizen," we are missing the mark. In fact, it is when our children's sins are VISIBLE that there is occasion for God to SHOW our children their NEED of a Savior. When a child admits, "But I CAN'T be good," we can rejoice for God is revealing a great reality to that little person.....All men, women, and even little children are depraved, and cannot, on their own, by obedience to the law, reach God. What an open door! Rejoice, and then PRAY, PRAY, PRAY! Read the Word, and PRAY!

May God draw each of our little ones to Himself, in mercy and grace.

We look forward to the day, but know it will be busy, as we have to come back home afterwards and prepare for the CHEF ball!

INTERESTING HEALTH TIPS

Jordan Rubin (The Maker's Diet) encourages us to drink tea with every meal; just remember to rinse out with water afterwards. (see below). Also, our doctor reminded us that the body needs a daily water intake of at least 50% of its weight. For this calculation, do not include tea, juice, or any other beverage. These are over and above the daily intake of WATER. Filtered water or pure spring water is best.

I learned something from our dentist recently. Did you know that herbal teas can cause cavities, as can regular tea? The teas change the pH levels in the mouth, which can promote decay. The hygeniests encouraged us to simply rinse out the mouth with water after a cup of tea/tisane, and to wait bit before brushing the teeth. You don't want to brush off the enamel that is weaker due to the pH change.

DO ALL THINGS FOR HIS GLORY

Whether we eat or drink, work or play, garden or ice skate, we are to do all things for God's glory. That does not just mean praying in the morning that we will do what God desires, but also praying WHILE we act so that we can keep in tune with HOW God would have us perform. Two weekends ago, while driving somewhere in the early evening, I felt overwhelmed by God's greatness. Perhaps I was reminded of this by the magnificent clouds and colorful sky that displayed the fingerprint of our great Creator God. I felt that I just needed to be thankful....thankful for every little thing! You know, when you start praising God or thanking Him for "particulars," you find that you could just go on and on! How I wish that we could live on the mountain tops every day! When the day is dreary, or we are tired, or some trial comes are way, we are to "count it all joy," anyway, and, perhaps, those are the times when we most need to get busy praising and thanking God, for He never changes!

Whether ye eat or drink... (I Cor. 10:31)

Sometimes it is difficult to really have the right motives and the right attitudes WHILE we are acting. If we are performing some act of mercy, HOW are we feeling while doing so? God looks at the heart. When hard situations arise, perhaps involving people we find difficult, we STILL need to do all things for God's glory. We know that He "works all things together for good for those who love Him and who are the called according to His purpose," so we should face trials with an overwhelming gratitude for God's sovereign control over ALL things.

Talking about glorifying God is important, as we can share insights with one another. How do YOU glorify Him while you clean the house? Do you pray as you go? Do you sing hymns? Recite verses? Some people pray for the people to whom the items being tidied belong. That's a good idea! How do YOU glorify God as you prepare a meal, keeping track of the timing off all the different dishes, running out with the vegetable parings for the compost, wiping up spills, setting the table? When driving here and there, do you have your mind only on the task at hand? How about praying for the people in the cars around you, or that God would prepare the hearts of the cashier, bank teller, or other shoppers you will meet throughout the day, that you would also be ready to speak a word in season?

I like how friends of ours pray before they begin any work in their home business, and after a fun baseball game with friends. Putting the focus on God and His loving protection does a lot to cultivate in us a "spirit of prayer."

Just this morning, as I looked at the website for the Beyond the Mask movie to see how things were going for the investment campaign, I took a moment to read over the goals of the Burns families involved in this endeavor. This is what I read:

"We believe that every heart is engraved with a desire and propensity toward stories of costly love, because this is the theme of the greatest story ever told, the Story that God is weaving through history itself. We believe that every great story points back to His Story in some way. But we want to go a step further than just telling great stories, because Hollywood already does that. We want to share stories about real people who have encountered the life-changing grace of Jesus Christ, and we want to do this in the action-adventure genre. We desire to point both believers and non-believers toward Jesus Christ, because He alone is worthy of our heart's deepest affections. He alone can carry the weight of our soul through life in a broken, twisted and hurting world..."

In asking for financial support, the team wants to underline, once more, their goal for this movie:

"If you are a believer, we’d like to ask you not just to support us financially but also pray that the message of finding our identity and justification in Christ would shine through strongly in the film and in the lives of those who are producing it."

This reminded me that we are indeed to do ALL things for HIS glory!

AN ESSENTIAL "READ!"

Praise God for His glorious WORD! And I thank Him for the wonderful teachers he has raised up since the beginning of time. One of these great men, still living today, is Pastor William Downing. Years ago I became "acquainted" with Mr. Downing through a very learned, godly, elderly man of our old church. In our discussions of the Bible, history, and church, Mr. E. recommended a church manual by Pastor Downing, his old pastor in California. In fact, this kind gentleman even procured this volume for our family!

Since that time, I have had the privilege of receiving many insights from this Pastor, via email, through online messages, and through his publications. This man has a heart for the Lord, and a desire to proclaim TRUTH. He is a preacher, pastor, theologian, historian, professor, and author. All of his writings are well-documented from the Bible and from many godly authors, and include quotes from original documents. In our family, we consider him the A.W. Pink of our time!

One book of his which I urge all to obtain is The New Testament Church. The detail, the depth, and the logic of his presentation have clarified so much to me in my understanding of the church, not only as it was in history, but as it should be today, according to Scripture. As Pastor Downing points out, so often a study of church history reveals man's sin more than anything! A study of the true New Testament church is different! Why? Because, instead of focusing on what man has done since the time of Christ, how he has incorporated Greek, pagan, humanistic, and selfish thinking into the way a church functions, we can examine the correct foundations of the church as Christ intended it. Of course, no one other than Jesus is perfect; therefore ALL churches on earth will be tainted with sin. If I could find the perfect church, it would cease to be so the moment I entered its portals! How surprised I think we will all be when we see Jesus face to face and fully understand what truth is! We are so finite, and must pray continually for wisdom from above, for humility, and for discernment.

However, we know that, as God exhorts us to be holy, as He indeed is holy, we must strive toward the high standard He has laid out in His word. Study the word we must! If we claim to follow Christ, there is no excuse for NOT studying the Bible. DOCTRINE IS IMPORTANT! The Bible IS doctrine!

As we all know, the citizens of Joplin, Missouri, have suffered heavy losses from the recent tornadoes which devastated their city. Homeschooling families NEED your help! A CIVIL WAR UNIT STUDY by Anne Belley

Years ago, as we were preparing to commence our study of the era of the War Between the States, I was overwhelmed with the great quantity of resources available on the subject! Before you begin, determine the facets on which you want your children to concentrate, as well as a prospective time frame. This is one area of study where you might be tempted to continue indefinitely. Of course, if this is your preference, by all means take the time you need!

The night before we began, I set the dining room table with the various materials I had found. These included biographies of Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, George B. McClellan, Clara Barton, Stonewall Jackson, and others, as well as books about the Civil War in general, and a reenactment photo book on Gettysburg. I also found a volume of poems from the Civil War, a cookbook, cassettes by Steven Wilkins explaining the war, and CD’s of songs from the North and South. Other articles such as period newspapers, reproductions of bank notes, Playmobil soldiers, a kepi and a drum from Vision Forum, Dover Civil War Uniforms Coloring Book, and a Civil War board game adorned the table. Everyone enjoyed discovering the things on the table, and all looked forward to beginning the new study.

We began by studying the life of Abraham Lincoln. Genevieve Foster’s Abraham Lincoln’s World is helpful* as it not only tells of his life in a vivid way, but also introduces us, as the title suggests, to the “world” at the time Lincoln was alive. Learn about Napoleon, Simon Bolivar, Beethoven, Francis Scott Key, Daniel Webster, King George III, Andrew Jackson, Kit Carson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jenny Lind, Florence Nightingale, and Queen Victoria. There is no need to do in depth studies of these individuals, but the fashion in which the author weaves her narrative puts into perspective many happenings which affected America from the outside and from the inside at this crucial point in history.

For a BALANCED view of Abraham Lincoln*, it is absolutely essential to read John Dwyer’s The War Between the States: America’s Uncivil War. In fact…you would certainly be sufficiently equipped to complete your entire study with this one textbook! For your own benefit, you could also read DiLorenzo’s The Real Lincoln.

Enhance your study for older students by having them read reproductions of original documents, and other booklets, such as The Real Cause of the War or War: Over Lincoln’s Tariff?; and Was Abraham Lincoln a Christian?; The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln (Monster or Messiah?) As I read aloud to the children from the various books we had obtained at the time, I recorded pertinent events on a white board as we read, and the children made up timeline booklets about Lincoln’s life.

These were done using a very simply method found in Dinah Zike’s, The Big Book of Books.

When we arrived at the beginning of the conflict between the states, we paused in our biographies to introduce the other aspects of this time period. The issue of States’ rights is a subject which must be discussed, especially for older students. Smaller children need to be exposed to it as well, but in less detail. Read accounts of the debates going on in Washington concerning this issue. Now might be a good time to insert a study on Government.

Sounding Forth the Trumpet For Children by Peter Marshall and David Manuel is an excellent “living book” to read to all. To balance out the Northern opinion seen in this volume, read also John S. Tilley’s Facts the Historians Leave Out, and The Southern Address, by John Calhoun.

Some excellent biographies include: Memories of Mosby’s Men by Samuel F. Chapman; JOHN PELHAM OF ALABAMA The Gallant Chief of J. E. B. Stuart's Horse Artillery by Ronald Rumburg; Stonewall Jackson’s Verse by R. Rumburg, Jefferson Davis, the Unreconstructed by Rumburg, and Robert E. Lee, A Character Study by H.H. Smith. Pat Wesolowski has put together an incredible unit study book called “The Civil War.” Her book inspired us to begin writing articles for a newspaper, to be printed out on tea-dyed paper for an authentic look.

As we read accounts of battles, biographies, and historical fiction, ideas for new “articles” arose. Some drew pen and ink sketches of battles, such as the Firing on Fort Sumter. Others created advertisements for articles worn, or used in homes. A report of the famous ships, the Monitor and the Meramac was included. One student posed as a young soldier writing home to “Mama” of the terrible camp conditions, while some wrote accounts of battles, and others letters from different viewpoints: contented slaves; unhappy slaves; and aristocrats related to Southern officers. The author of the unit study book suggests obtaining CD ROM entitled Compton’s Concise Encyclopedia which formats newsletters automatically and contains information and photos which can be inserted into your paper. If you obtain period newspapers (library; Bluestocking Press), you can copy their design.

The Civil War game we purchased contained a good-sized map of all the battles, which we posted on the wall. Even more valuable to us were the descriptions of the battles. As we “read through the war” in our various books, we always referred to this guide for a concise summary of the battle, and located it on the map. Once you are fairly familiar with these, play the game to test your knowledge!

Watch the family movie. Quest for Glory, made by The Burns Family Studies (produced years prior to Pendragon: Sword of His Father).

This unit allowed for a lot of reading time as a family. Often while I read, the younger children colored in the Dover Civil War costumes book, or cut out period paper dolls. Older ones continued their sketches for the newspaper and their Abraham Lincoln books. When finished, do another type of booklet, outlining the life of Stonewall Jackson, or Robert E. Lee. Stress the spiritual aspects, teaching children that this foundation is what color's a man's character, and the direction he will give as a leader.

Tobin's Lab also carries a variety of activity books, quiz cards, and paper dolls.

Critical Thinking Press puts out a book on “Critical Thinking in United States History.” Book Two deals with the “New Republic to Civil War.” The author is Kevin O’Reilly. With this volume junior high or high school students learn to identify and evaluate evidence before forming an opinion. Example of topics covered are: Was Slavery Good or Bad? How Did Slavery Affect Slaves: Were Slaves Fed an Adequate Diet? What Were the Causes of the Civil War? Which Side Caused the Firing on Fort Sumter? What Led to the Emancipation Proclamation and England’s Neutrality in the Civil War? Hmmm….cause for much reflection!

When reading books such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and books about Harriet Tubman, keep in mind that these do not depict the majority of cases. Steve Wilkins's recorded lecture dealing with slavery, as well as books like A Girl’s Life in Virginia Before the War by Letitia Burwell, are very helpful for understanding how things actually were in the south. We thoroughly enjoyed G.A. Henty’s With Lee in Virginia, although there were a few sections towards the end on romance, which I chose to edit as I read aloud. The gripping tale and excellent literary style had all of the children begging, “Oh, please, don’t stop reading!” Another favorite was Iron Scouts of the Confederacy by Lee McGiffin (Christian Liberty Press). A library book we also found enthralling was Rifles for Watie (this I also edited as I read). )

The above-mentioned author, John Dwyer, has also produced some excellent CDs pertaining to the War Between the States, including one on the Indian, Stand Watie. Streams of Civilization, America’s Providential History, and A Beka history books (various levels) all provided more insights. The Call of Duty: The Sterling Nobility of Robert E. Lee by J. Steven Wilkins is available through Vision Forum. Rea C. Berg’s Early American History, A Literature Approach covers this time period. She suggests reading and studying Abe Lincoln Grows Up by Carl Sandburg, Go Free Or Die by Jeri Ferris, and Walking the Road to Freedom by Jeri Ferris.

Other popular writings include Across Five Aprils, Red Cap, Lincoln’s Drummer Boy, Charley Skedaddle, Who Comes With Cannons (Note: in this book Quaker theology is exposed as truth); Pink and Say; Red Badge of Courage, The Battle of Gettysburg by Neil Johnson. (I have not listed the other authors as the books can all be found by title at the public library. If you need any other books on the Civil War, look under “United States History, Civil War.” Restrict your search to the Juvenile section, if you desire.)

For older students, Robert Lewis Dabney’s A Defense of Virginia and the South is essential reading, and adults will appreciate the same author’s volume on Stonewall Jackson.

The Civil War unit study book, aforementioned, also includes a host of ideas such as: newspaper article ideas; an extensive bibliography; a large timeline (see The Time Tables of History by Bernard Grun); geography study following the battles; hidden word search games and puzzles; economics and statistics of the civil war; fabric flags to make; construction paper hats; full uniforms; candlemaking; study of cotton and how to dye it; outdoor campfire cooking; and more! To find summaries of battles, lists of interesting facts, and of people, you must read this book! I believe I purchased mine through Greenleaf Press.

The Civil War for Kids by Janis Herbert is another valuable resource. I used the two books (above) simultaneously. This book is also full of fun ideas to bring your study alive. We practiced army drills, made hardtack, acted out battles, and more. You can build a lean-to shelter, make homemade butternut dye and a makeshift stretcher, write with berry ink, and create a secret code. The format of this book is very appealing, with its colored cover and numerous black and white photos thoughout the book. Use with all ages.

Many videos are available, but you, the parent MUST preview them to watch out for language, inappropriate story lines, overly graphic battle scenes, and immodest clothing. The best we have ever seen is by New Liberty and is entitled WARRIORS OF HONOR: THE FAITH AND LEGACIES OF ROBERT E. LEE AND STONEWALL JACKSON.(www.newlibertyvideos.com) Of course, GODS AND GENERALS is a must!

Little Bear Wheeler’s story tapes, and excellent videos can be obtained through Mantle Ministries as well as Vision Forum. Dover and Tobin’s Lab carry Civil War Photo Postcards, detailed coloring books, dioramas to cut and assemble, and paper dolls. You might want to be careful with the ladies’ costume coloring books and paper dolls, as Civil War evening attire often included low necklines. Keep this in mind, too, when sewing your own costumes. Be considerate of others!

Simplicity and McCall’s carry patterns for boys and girls, men and women. There is quite a variety available, but be sure to read the back of the pattern or the instruction sheet first. Some are historically authentic, and quite tricky to make, requiring the proper undergarments (for ladies) in order for the dress to fit correctly. There are many web sites which show authentic styles and fabrics so you can get an idea of what you would like. Since the dresses are so ample, look for inexpensive material…you made need up to 17 yards! Often, used clothing, such as long skirts and dresses can be altered quite easily. For petticoats, and hoop skirts, as well as linings, do not purchase new material. Instead use white or pale sheets. Often these are available at garage sales. Just remember to bleach them, and wash with hot water.

Oral and written reports, videos of reenactments done by the children, games, booklets, debates, mock interviews on cassette, and reading aloud portions of books are all valid experiences to be included in this fascinating study.

Many field trips are possible. In St. Louis, contact Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis County Parks, or look on line for reenactments near you. Wrap up the unit with a camp out, or a party. Have guests, even if they are just your own family members, come in costume. Cook authentic food of the period and present your research. We used the newspaper as the invitation to a Civil War graduation party where we were privileged to learn period dances. And while you have those costumes on hand, don’t forget to sign up for the CHEF CHRISTMAS BALL held in December of every year, Lord willing!

HELP FOR JOPLIN

Since the tornadoes hit the city of Joplin, Missouri, we have been praying for the families who have lost loved ones, their homes, everything! I have been meaning to post, as I did when the storms hit Alabama, but had neglected to do so. On my way to our used curriculum sale last week, I drove through the area of Maryland Heights (St. Louis), which had been hit in April. More than six weeks after the storms, in which no one was killed, the devastation is still so apparent! We saw spots where houses had once stood, empty now, except for a slab foundation, brick houses half gone, blue tarps everywhere covering roof damage, and trees ripped apart. OUR STAY IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

In April, my daughter and I had the great privilege of visiting Charleston, South Carolina for just a few short days. What full days they were! We walked and walked, enjoying all the sights! While strolling along the riverfront, we could see out to the Atlantic on one side, and view beautiful mansions on the other, not to mention gardens filled with exquisite blooms! Particularly delightful were the brightly painted homes on Rainbow Row....so different from home, or from anywhere else we had ever been!

One of the highlights of our trip was a stay at the King Geoge IV Inn, a Bed and Breakfast within minutes from everything we wanted to see and do in the historic part of town. As we arrived, we were greeted warmly and shown into the breakfast room where we were given all the highlights of the inn and the town. Following our friendly hostess, we climbed the stairs past lovely porches with hanging plants to our beautiful room, all decorated with purple and green hydrangeas! And I had not even mentioned that my favorite color is purple!

I slept in an extremely comfortable posted double bed, while Valérie snoozed peacefully in an equally beautiful single bed. The room also boasted a fireplace, sink and vanity area, comfortable velvet sofa, a chair, closet, dresser, and television. Since it was a short walk to the sights, we were able to come back between activities to lay down our parcels, to freshen up, or to snack on a cookie or two from the breakfast room.

We were delighted to meet the owner, and to taste his delicious homemade breads for breakfast, along with eggs, bacon, yogourt, fruit, and tea. As this was our first experience in a Bed and Breakfast, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sharing breakfast with other guests in the breakfast room. Had the weather been a bit better that first morning (it had poured earlier on), we would have breakfasted outdoors. We discovered that our fellow tablemates had all stayed at the Inn on previous visits, and had been so delighted that they determined to return on this recent trip.

The Bradrick Crisis Leadership Network has set up this site to enable Christians to help out in this time of crisis in Alabama. Listen to (and see) family members share their stories of the storms that ripped through their valley. In one of the videos, the oldest son of the Lee family, whose father died while protecting his family, gives a description of the collapse of their home and the aftermath, speaks of the family's needs, and testifies of the Lord's goodness in spite of all they are going through.

The website listed above is a legitimate avenue for giving to these suffering families, and I encourage you to do so.

GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN...

Last week, parts of St. Louis, Missouri were hit with a devastating tornado. That's how we thought of it, with neighborhoods destroyed, church roofs lifted off, and trees uprooted and removed from yards. However, no one was killed. I feel for those who have lost their homes, perhaps everything they owned. Yesterday when I was at the bank, I saw a news report of tornadoes that were ripping through the south. I had no idea of the extent of these storms. Today I understand, from a distance, mind you, what "devastation" means.

Our hearts go out to those who have not only lost possessions and precious mementos, but, so much more than these, loved ones as well. I believe the figure is now 250 for those who have lost their lives. The most touching story I have heard today is one shared by Doug Phillips of Vision Forum, about the Lee family. As I tried to digest the facts concerning this family of fifteen, I was reminded of Jesus' words in John 15:13: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." You see, as the home of the Lee family literally came crashing down on top of the praying group, Mr. Tom Lee was called to lay down his life. In a heroic and selfless effort to protect his children, Tom threw himself over some of them. His successful endeavor cost him his very life. What LOVE this man displayed. As he breathed his last, he prayed to God for his family. He served right to the end. (To read the full blog post, click HERE.)

We are reminded of the Apostle Paul's words: " I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:7-8). We praise God that this family will be able to remember the courage and godly protection their father afforded them, and we pray that the testimony of his life will draw many to the truth of the Gospel. When Jesus spoke of laying down one's life for a friend, He was, of course, referring to His impending death on the cross. We do not deserve to be protected from Hell, but Jesus, through love, offers eternal life to His elect.

We also know that the Lord promises that "all things work together for good for those who love God, who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28. We have confidence that God will gird up this family, and the many others who are grieving at this time. Those who have a relationship with the Living Savior may say, with Paul: "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience." Romans 8: 18-25.

God's Word also instructs us that we are to share in the joys and SORROWS of others. The call for us is to PRAY and, if we can, to ACT. Pray for comfort, for healing, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Pray for physical needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, and water...all the things we take for granted on a daily basis. Pray for the oldest son of the Lee family, who must now step into his father's shoes to care for his mother and twelve siblings. Pray for rescue workers, hospital staff, churches, and others who are altruistically attempting to find and to care for the wounded. The Bible tells us that we are to pray, but also, to put love into action. James reminds us that we cannot help the hungry by blessing them and then sending them away hungry. Money will be needed. Physical help is obviously lacking as the destruction is so wide-spread. As we pray, we must as ourselves what God would have US do.

If only we had known! Valerie and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Charleston at the beginning of the month, but look what we missed...a history tour with Bill Potter! Look here for details! The cost is so reasonable, and the hotel rooms that have been secured are also at a great price. April and May are peak periods for the beautiful city of Charleston, so it is a blessing that Vision Forum was able to reserve rooms at such a rate.

Our only consolation in missing this fantastic opportunity is that Bill Potter will be speaking at this year's CHEF (Missouri) homeschool conference in June. We will simply have to envision the sights we took in this month as we listen to his messages in St. Charles! The theme for this year's conference is the Civil War.

Fort Sumter, built as a result of multiple threats to the coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina, years prior to 1861, became a main point of contention between its home state and the Federal government during the presidency of James Buchanan. South Carolina had seceded from the Union due to the conflict over the tariff. Within days, on December 26, 1860, Federal General Anderson and his troops secretly transferred from nearby Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Sumter was now, essentially, an enemy holding in a land not its own. Although South Carolina demanded the relinquishment of Fort Sumter by the Federal government, President Buchanan refused. Instead, on January 5, 1861, he ordered supplies be delivered to Fort Sumter on the Star of the West. The tons of supplies and 200 soldiers never landed due to firing by shore cannon which "welcomed" the merchant ship. The anger of the South Carolinians was briefly pacified by a truce contrived by Buchanan, and Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America (CSA), also strove to keep the peace.

On March 5, 1861, word arrived at Washington, notifying the new President, Abraham Lincoln, that Fort Sumter’s paucity of supplies was weakening the troops and that they feared they would not be able to hold the Fort much longer. While the Secretary of State, William H. Seward saw wisdom in relinquishing the Fort, Abraham Lincoln was determined that he would not give up --- not without a fight. His subsequent decision to send new supplies, such as food, water, and stores, once communicated to Carolina governor, Francis W. Pickens, provoked even more wrath on the part of this southern state.

General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, a Creole from Louisiana who had been given charge of the CSA defenses at Charleston, received orders from Davis to demand a surrender of Fort Sumter. Why should Charlestonians allow the fort built through funds supplied by southern taxes to be a base for the enemy? It was unheard of to acquiesce to such a demand. The soldiers occupying the fort would attack the Charlestonians, blockade their port, and continue to force taxation on them. Anderson and his men would not be allowed to remain at Fort Sumter. While Beauregard offered a peaceful departure, Lincoln favored taking a stand, even if the outcome was war.

No longer the 3-story fortification of 1861!

Beauregard’s demands were met with a promise on the part of Anderson, that they would depart from the Fort by noon of April 15, unless supplies arrived before that date. With Federal ships laden with supplies just on the horizon, the proposal was unacceptable. The South refused.

The first shot on Fort Sumter from Fort Johnson, James Island was heard on April 12, 1861, 150 years go from today. Thus began the War --- The War Between the States --- The War of Northern Aggression ---The American Civil War ---The War that took at least 618,000 lives --- The War that changed America.

Valerie and I just got back from a short trip to Charleston, South Carolina. It was absolutely wonderful! The history of this city is fascinating! Since we are are still catching up on family time and duties since our arrival, it will be a couple of days before I can get a real post up. "Stay tuned" for a report on our trip to Fort Sumter!

And what MIGHT they have been preparing for a meal? We know that times were hard, food was scarce, and the stress of the battlefield could not yield gourmet meals by any stretch of the imagination. The men, however, needed energy to continue on in their calling to defend the South. Willingly, Southerners donated portions from their own meals to the soldiers, or made a concentrated effort to try to grow more food in order to share with them. Due to many factors, food supplies were diminished during the war years, and for some time after 1865. For instance, the number of farmers was reduced because the men were needed for fighting, coastal blockades and the prohibition of trade between the North and South prevented items from entering the region, and railroads were sabotaged. Add to that the Union raids on civilians' homes and farms, and a very dire picture is indeed portrayed. With such conditions, inflation was unbelievable!

Meals were meager, offering perhaps salt beef and flour, or some crackers with bacon. Often, armies had to subsist mainly on sweet potatoes, with no meat. Pumpkins grew well, and provided many vitamins. One source of protein, although the people of that era were unaware of its benefits, was a combination of legumes and grains, such as bakes beans and cornbread, and sour milk could be converted to cottage cheese for homesteaders.  The latter was probably not available for the soldiers. Lack of salt proved an obstacle to meat preservation, and to flavoring what food the people could obtain. So desperate were some that they actually boiled down dirt from the floors of their meat smokehouses in the hopes of finding some salt for these purposes.   An alternative means of preserving meat was sun-drying.

Corn meal in various forms (bread, muffins), and flour (wheat and rice) provided the much needed carbohydrates for both citizens and troops. Leaven for raised breads was derived from sour milk and molasses, potassium carbonate, or potassium bicarbonate. Of course, it was not always possible to take the time necessary for baking bread, so hardtack became a staple. Sometimes this unleavened bread was softened in coffee, or heated in pork grease. Not only were food supplies in demand, but often soldiers lacked the essential kitchen tools for utilizing some of the supplies.   Apparently some soldiers came up with ingenious ways of cooking flour and water by mixing the ingredients in handkerchiefs and baking the resulting on heated stones! Another used a ramrod wound around with dough which he set on a homemade spit above a fire!

As for beverages, one substitute for the unobtainable coffee (it cost two days' pay to buy just a pound), was acorns, which were dried, shelled, and roasted. Wild plant leaves became herbal teas, providing flavors such as raspberry, blackberry, and huckleberry. Blackberry wine was also concocted.

Sweets could usually only be had in the form of molasses or sorghum desserts, and often the ever-popular gingerbread could only be eaten rarely, as a special treat. While we might think of this as a wintery dessert, our family enjoys it year round. It often provides a delicious breakfast accompaniment when we come in from gardening in the early morning hours in summer. Serve with applesauce, butter, or whipped cream and fresh garden berries or peaches. Below you will find three recipes for foods which were enjoyed during the War Between the States, two of which we have adapted from  BLUE AND GREY COOKERY, Authentic Recipes From the Civil War Years by High and Judy Gown.    The gingerbread recipe comes from Tasha Tudor's Receipt Book with a few changes (The Tasha Tudor Cookbook; Recipes and Reminiscences from Corgi Cottage.)

CIVIL WAR HOME-BAKED BEANS

Ingredients:

1 pound Great Northern beans
1/4 pound of bacon(we sometimes substitute 1/2 lb. beef soup bones)
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 tsp. dry mustard (NOTE: During the time period of the WBTS, mustard seeds were dried and ground)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses (golden gives a more subtle flavor than black strap)
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup water

Wash beans and soak overnight in a pot of water. Drain off water, and refresh with enough cold water to cover the beans. Bring to boil over low heat. Simmer for about 2 hours, adding boiling water to keep beans covered. Fry bacon, remove from pan; saute onion in bacon grease. Add remaining ingredients (not beans) and mix well. Add this mixture to beans which have been drained. Add 1/2 cup water, mix lightly. Break up bacon or any beef from the beef bone and sprinkle over the top. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until nicely browned.

OLD SOUTHERN CORNBREAD

1 1/4 cups yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup white unbleached flour
1 tsp. sea salt
2-4 Tablespoons sweetener (we use sucanat)
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 cups buttermilk or regular milk
1/2 tsp. soda
2 eggs
2 Tbsp. melted butter

Mix cornmeal, flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder; mix well. Combine milk and soda in a small bowl and beat until foamy. Add to cornmeal mixture. Beat in eggs; stir in melted butter. Pour into a greased 8 inch by 8 inch baking pan. Bake in 450 degree oven for 20 minutes or until lightly browned on top.

GINGERBREAD, a Southern Favorite (This is a cake, not a cookie)

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar (sucanat makes it a little more crumbly, but it works)
1 egg, beaten
1 cup light molasses OR 3/4 cup honey and 1/4 cup blackstrap molasses (the second option is our favorite)
2 1/2 cups unbleached white flour (you can use whole wheat , but it makes it more crumbly)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger (fresh, grated ginger adds "zing")

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 cup hot water

1 1/2 cups raisins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9 inch by 9 inch cake tins, or one 9 inch by 13 inch glass baking dish. In large bowl, cream together butter and sucanat (or sugar). Add egg and molasses and mix. Sift in dry ingredients. Mix well. Add hot water and beat until smooth. Stir in raisins. Fill pans half full, bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cut in squares. Serve warm with homemade applesauce or butter, or cooled with whipped cream flavored with vanilla and a bit of confectioner's sugar.

I could try to find old Library of Congress photos of ladies of the Civil War transporting goods in baskets, or write up a little report of the baskets of the era, so that this post would relate to the theme of the blog, but in this case, I will just present my personal experience.

I LOVE baskets! They are so versatile, being both practical and decorative. We have used them for picnics, to carry garden tools and garden produce, for knitting and sewing projects, for school books, for stationery, for dolls, for bathroom towels, for fruit arrangements, for baked goodies, for birthday presents, and for decorative centerpieces filled with growing wheat grass and daffodils! I am sure you have more suggestions, as well!

Our children have also enjoyed learning to make baskets, and we have purchased kits from Keepers of the Faith. I do enjoy the reed materials included in these kits, but I am partial to willow, which is fairly difficult to come across. Most materials and finished products come from China.

I was thus thrilled to find a company based in Saint Louis. The owners began this family business in 2002. Willow Baskets "R" Us was established in 2002 as a family business. Our family dogs love the new basket bed we purchased through this kind family, a lovely doll set-up occupies another smaller basket, Japanese dishes fill a third, awaiting their use in our current unit study, and a half-done knitting project can be found in yet another basket. They are all of different shapes and sizes.
Because of my interest in these products, the owner has kindly agreed to bring some of the baskets to display at the CHEF Annual Ladies' Tea on March 30th (new date) at the Hearth Room in Historic Webster Groves.

CAUSES of the CIVIL WAR

"The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control of the Southern states," said author Charles Dickens.

I am from Canada. I grew up with very little exposure to the War Between the States, and, if any thing WAS said, its title was definitely not given as such! I was taught that Lincoln was among the best American presidents because he freed the slaves, and for most of my life, that was all I knew about this part of US history.

While I would not desire to enslave anyone, I do have to agree with Charles Dickens that Lincoln's tactics were less than honorable and his motives less than pure in directing his attention to the slaves in the manner which he undertook. While slavery became an issue, history reveals that it was NOT the cause of war. Undoubtedly, Lincoln was very concerned about the loss of tariff revenue as he himself even stated. In a discussion with Colonel John B. Baldwin over the possibility of Virgina's following South Carolina and other states in secession, a proposition concerning dealing peaceably with South Carolina brought about the following question posed by the President: "What, then, would become of my tariff?"

The increasing awareness of the evils of the slave trade produced varied results. Surprisingly, Virginia and Georgia were foremost in the efforts to do away with the practice long before the Civil War. Even as far back as the 1770s, America had begun to work on abolishing the slave trade. The freeing of slaves, however, was a different process. The desire to precipitate this event presented itself in various manners, from different sources. Some of this pressure contributed to Lincoln's actions during the war.

My old 1960 World Book Encyclopedia gives a balanced view of the order of events leading up to the Emancipation Proclamation. It states that Lincoln refused, at the beginning of the war, to pass laws in favor of slaves' freedom: "...in his inaugural address he repeated his often-made statement that he had no wish to interfere with slavery where it already existed. During the early months of the war, Lincoln held that he was fighting to save the Union, not to free the slaves." With Northern defeats increasing, however, by the summer of 1862 the President's opinion changed direction. In order to protect the interests of the North, he took advantage of a right he would not normally have had. In order to hide his desperation, he waited for a victory to announce his decision, then pronounced judgment on the South. Their refusal to stop opposing the Union and to come once again under its jurisdiction by January 1st, 1863 would force the President to pronounce that all their slaves would be freed. "Under the ordinary peacetime powers of the President, Lincoln did not have such authority. Issued 'as a fit and necessary war measure,' his proclamation freed slaves only in those territories still in rebellion. The Emancipation Proclamation was of little military importance. While the war lasted, most of the slaves remained loyal to their masters. But it satisfied Northern antislavery opinion..."

I am so grateful that we still have access to materials which help us understand history. So many of the publications I once read to my children in early homeschooling years presented a very biased view of the epoch. All I seemed to run across pointed to slavery as the cause of the civil war, underlined the valor of Lincoln, and applauded the results of his Emancipation Proclamation. I did not read about the tariff, about the South's reluctance to secede, about cases of secession by other NORTHERN states prior to the Civil War, the plans of the South for the eventual release of slaves, and the catastrophe of "reconstruction." I did not understand what was happening economically at the time, nor about how the votes were distributed in Congress, nor, especially, the religious climate of the day.

At this point in time, it is easy to say that I only know a tip of the iceberg of all there is to understand about the war, and the impact my understanding has on how I view politics today. The most important source I have found in drawing all together the various points on which I have been so ignorant, is John Dwyer's The War Between the States: America's Uncivil War book. CIVIL WAR in MISSOURI: JEFFERSON BARRACKS

For the Civil War Sesquicentennial, Jefferson Barracks Park is hosting a FREE exhibit in the Old Ordnance Room from February 2nd to June 5th, 2011. As Missouri was scene of the third highest number of battles during the War Between the States, Jefferson Barracks, named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, holds an important place in history. Visitors will have the opportunity to view panels depicting Wilson's Creek, Price's Raid, and Belmont battles. Uniforms, equipment, and other artifacts add to the experience. The goal of the display is to aid visitors in understanding camp life of the common soldier, as well as his participation in battles. Jefferson Barracks was not actually a battlefield, but was used for training soldiers and as a hospital during the War. It also served as a primary ordnance depot for the Union army. Built in 1826 as a replacement for Fort Bellefontaine, it had easy access to trees and to limestone, valuable resources necessary for construction. Because it was located close to the city and to the Mississippi River, the site of Jefferson Barracks and Benton Barracks (which has ceased to exist) proved a strategic spot. It has not been used exclusively for the Civil War; troops and supplies involved with conflicts from the Mexican War to World War II were gathered here. Jefferson Davis (pictured above), Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and other generals of the Civil war were stationed at this post. Extending over two thousand miles, and covering two miles of the west bank of the Mississippi River, Jefferson Barracks represented the largest army reservation.

CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL HAPPENINGS

Since the year 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the War Between the States, many cities around the country will be hosting a variety of educational activities related to the war. For those living in Missouri, the most popular sites include Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, Jefferson Barracks, the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob, Confederate Soldiers' Home of Missouri, and the Bellefontaine Cemetery.

The first location listed above, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, was established to commemorate the Battle of Wilson's Creek,which marked the commencement of the Civil War in Missouri. Strategic because of its rivers, the Missouri and Mississippi, its natural resources, and its working population, this state became a central focus in 1861. While most of its citizens prefered neutrality, Governor Claiborne F. Jackson was in favor of the Confederacy. Such affinities presented a threat to the Union.

Following some skirmishes in the area, an important battle ensued in the fields and hills around Wilson's Creek, on August 10, 1861. Numbering more that 12,000, the Confederates sought to defeat the 5,400 Federals. After six hours of serious battle, the Confederates did secure a victory, the Union general, Lyons, having been killed and the demoralized troops retreating to Rolla. The high numbers of casualties on the battlefield forced the exhausted Confederate army to remain on the field to take care of the wounded and to bury the dead, instead of pursuing the enemy. They lost 12 percent of their men, while the Union Arrmy losts 24 percent, either killed, wounded, taken prisoner, or missing. Bloody Hill witnessed the highest percentage of casualties, 1,700 in all, 20 percent of all the soldiers who battled here, in the most intensive of all the fights of that day.

When the War Between the States finally ended in 1865, Missouri ranked third in the quantity of battles and skirmishes, being one of the most fought-over states.

The Last Earthly Meeting Of Lee and Jackson ( A few days in May 1863) by H. Rondel Rumburg.

This is a concise, easy-to-comprehend 52-page booklet published in 1997, which will enhance anyone’s study of the Civil war.

This short book recounts the last events which occurred before Jackson's wounding and death at Chancellorsville. In the first chapter, a well-written narrative of the fatal shot to Jackson by his own army is recounted in such a way that the reader feels as though he or she is present at the event.

While examining the battle of Chancellorsville, in chapter two the author contrasts the characters of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson with that of Joseph Hooker, General of the Army of the Potomac. This “boastful enemy” had such great confidence in the flesh, proclaiming to hold the strongest position on the planet, even stating, “We have got the enemy where God Almighty can’t save him.” The author points out how God dealt with him concerning his pride and his “waking calls” to this man.

Chapter three presents us with a comparison between Lee and Jackson, true Christians who were such a contrast to Hooker. Here we read about how these two Southern Generals met, and about their points in common and their differences. Not surprisingly, their friendship was strong, and Jackson was said to be Lee’s right arm, while Lee was known to be the only man Jackson would follow without questioning. Indeed several interesting points are laid before us as to their similarities in life, the army, and their faith.

Now we come to the last meeting where the two greatest Christians in the southern armies speak on earth for the last time. This is the final war council between these fast friends, who trusted each other’s decisions implicitly.

Following this is an account of the Battle of Chancellorsville, well-written in an interesting manner, revealing a true picture of the great military victory.

Lastly we are lead through the death of Jackson and the sadness Lee felt.

Note the worthwhile appendix as it states what Lee’s son, Robert, and Douglass Southall Freedman believed would have been the outcome of Gettysburg if Jackson had been in command.

Birthday Fun: POLAND

Our family loves to make a big deal about birthdays! A couple of years ago, we chose POLAND as a theme for Marjolaine's birthday since she already had researched the country and enjoyed its culture, customs, and cuisine...not to mention the COSTUMES!

Nikola decided that a Polish vest would be just the thing to make for Marjolaine, and set to work sewing and embellishing such a garment. It was so lovely with the skirt and apron! As usual, all the girls (and boys) looked for clothing items in our vast array of such articles in which to dress up for the day! The picture below shows Marjolaine and Nikola in a little fun birthday pose!

From morning till night (and over the next few days!), we enjoyed some Polish recipes for breakfast, lunch, and supper, played music, watched dances, and danced dances! Table decorations included mugs which depicted dancers, beautifully decorated wooden eggs, flowers, lace, cds, books, fabric, and DOLLS! GROWING UP IN THE 1850s

Following a message delivered by Rondel Rumburg, I decided to purchase the book of which he spoke: GROWING UP IN THE 1850s: The Journal of Agnes Lee . It was an encouragement to me, not only to read about life before the civil war, but mainly to discover the struggles of a young girl as she tried to come to grips with her religious upbringing.

Eleanor Agnes Lee was Robert E. Lee’s fifth child. Her childhood journal begins in December 1852 when she was twelve years old. “The everyday life of a little school girl of twelve years is not startling,” she modestly observed in April 1853. However, this five-year diary reveals much of a Southern girl’s life in the 1850s! While the book is written in lively, yet articulate style and is full of interesting information, the most important aspect that can be gleaned is her search for true salvation and her self-examination.

So often we rely on what we have heard and read to determine what we are. The Bible, however, reveals that having only head knowledge of Him is not equivalent to a relationship with Him. The Pharisees are the ultimate example of depending on knowledge for salvation, as opposed to an intelligent faith AND a heart change, a true personal relationship with the living God. The account of Jesus' discussion with Nicodemus in John chapter 3 is such a wonderful passage as it shows us how God works in the life of a believer.

Jesus declares, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." When Nicodemus follows this statement with incredulity, noting how a grown man can not "enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born," Jesus reiterates, "You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." And, to Nicodemus' wonderment at this saying, Jesus reproaches him for depending on head knowledge: "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand theses things?"

Can a dead man choose life? Obviously not. We are, as the Bible tells us, "dead in trespasses and sin." We NEED God to PUT life into us; we must be born from above in order to see the kingdom of God. We are reminded that it is by the will of God, not of the flesh (John 1:13) that we are born again. God makes us a new creation!

Eleanor Agnes Lee reveals her heart in her journal as she notes the discrepancy between what she has been taught and the way she herself thinks and lives. This book gives, in a simple way, a brief taste of the self-examination encouraged by Jonathan Edwards' volume THE TRUE BELIEVER, and Mattew Mead's THE ALMOST CHRISTIAN DISCOVERED. All of these books encourage and exhort us to "make [our] calling and election sure." (I Peter 1:10)

PREPARING FOR THE NEW YEAR

EVERY day belongs to God, but somehow we feel that the first day of the new year is exciting, bringing hope of the year ahead. Wouldn't it be wonderful if , as we have our fun food and happy times, we could be truly celebrating our Lord?

When the people of Israel gathered at the Water Gate in the time of the return from Babylon to Jerusalem, they did so for a very special reason. "They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had given to Israel. Accordingly, the priest Exra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. He read from it...from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.....the Levites helped the people to undertand the law, while the people remained in their places. So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading."
Nehemiah 8:1-3; 8 (portions)

When the people heard all that the priest read from God's word, they wept, because they perceived that they had fallen short of obeying God's holy law. However, Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites encouraged the people to rejoice that the Word of the LORD had been brought before them. They reminded the people that "the joy of the LORD is your strength." (Neh. 8:10 b) Instead of grieving, they were told to "Go your way, eat the fat; and drink sweet winde and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our LORD." (Neh. 8:10a) "And al the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them." (Neh. 8:12)

The end of the year is a perfect time to reflect on the days and months we have just lived through and to examine our lives and hearts in light of the Bible. We should end 2010 and begin 2011 with the Word of God, privately and as a family, perhaps also as a church family. We might take time to confess and to grieve over our sins and shortcomings. As we look to our Sovereign Lord, we can then lift up our heads, rejoicing that He has shown us our hearts, brought us to repentance, and shown us Himself. He alone is our hope. His Word is holy!. While the first of January, New Year's Day, is NOT a holy day as was the day that the law was read and explained that day in Jerusalem, we can still eat and drink and rejoice, sharing with others of God's bounty, and of His infinite grace.

Jesus IS Lord! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?

     When I was in Japan, many, many people asked me questions which required that I give an answer for the hope within me. Why are you a Christian? Is your husband-to-be a Christian? What is Christmas? What IS a Christian? In North America, often this question is answered in a human way, mentioning traditions of men, rituals, customs, and traditions. My Japanese acquaintances wanted more.

     First of all, they assumed that all of Americans (and I would include Canadians) were Christians, and they knew that Christians were to hold to certain moral standards. This posed a problem for the Japanese I met. Why, then, they wondered, was there so much crime and violence in America? Why all the decadent television shows? Why all the immorality? Even though they knew virtually nothing of the Bible, their God-made consciences told them something was fundamentally wrong with this picture!

     Not EVERYONE is a Christian! It is not a national privilege, not a genetic disposition, not a family tradition to be Christian! In the Bible studies the missionaries led, we began at the beginning. The VERY beginning: Genesis 1:1. In fact, this is the ONLY Bible verse I know in Japanese! "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." They had to know about our Creator and how he made the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th.

     Following this solid introduction, they were told of SIN. They had NEVER even HEARD of Adam and Eve! I was amazed! But then again, how many of our fellow citizens know the whole story of Adam and Eve? And do they know of the promise in the account, that while Adam and Eve sinned, and therefore the whole of mankind is depraved, and sinful, God had a plan? Genesis 3:15 "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." This curse on Satan foretold of the coming of a Savior, Jesus Christ. The Israelites knew it. They looked forward to the Messiah who would release them from the power of Satan and death. Then we presented the solution to our sin problem, Jesus Christ.

     We explained how God came down in the form of a helpless baby, to grow up to teach of the Kingdom of God, to heal the sick, to give sight to the blind, and to make the lame to walk. The Japanese people with whom I was in contact wondered about Easter...Resurrection Day. They were touched by the movie shown them describing the life of Jesus, and his death. Why did he have to die? There was no other way for sinners to be saved. His blood sacrifice was all that was needed.

    The problem with everyone, everywhere, is that they (we!) either think that God does not exist, or that they themselves have no sin worthy of death. Of course, this is not what the Bible tells us. "All have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23    "For the wages of sin is death..." Romans 6:23a.    The promise of a Messiah is one of hope, since we cannot save ourselves and make ourselves perfect: "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23b.

     Some young people over there in Japan embraced the truth. Jesus did not remain in the grave. He was raised from the dead! He alone can save us from our sins! Through the Bible, these individuals met with the Living God. The Holy Spirit took the truths of the Bible, and applied them to their hearts, moving in them to give them saving faith, repentance, and a new life in Christ.

      So...what is Christian? Ephesians 2:1-10 tells us very clearly:

"You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air; the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved--and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God--not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for god works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life." (NRSV Bible)

SO...What is a Christian? A Christian is born again, not by his own doing, but by God's will and power. I do not save myself. I can't. I am dead in trespasses and sins without Christ. Can a dead man decide to follow Christ. God quickens, or makes alive, not me. But praise God that he sent his only begotten Son to pay the price for my sins! HE SAVES. SALVATION IS OF THE LORD!

     SO...What is a Christian? A Christian is a sinner saved by grace. He has a God-given faith. FAITH: Forsaking All I Take Him. Life is new, has new meaning, a new purpose. A Christian is saved FOR a reason...to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever!

We are so excited when we find products that are NOT made in China! Recently we purchased two willow baskets from LANA TRANS IMPORT LLC, a very friendly family from Bosnia. The quality of materials and the workmanship are excellent and the prices are incredibly LOW! The company also manufactures furniture. Their doggie bed is adorable! A whole village in Bosnia participates in this family business, collecting the willow and transforming it into the many articles visible on the website. The family is located in St. Louis. (see link)

For a few years now, we have been using chapstick, salve, eye cream, and facial scrubs from a sweet lady in Missouri. Her company, Old Union Originals (see link), provides high quality, all-natural products at very reasonable costs. She also has a store on Etsy. First-time customers will receive a free chapstick with their order! Some of my girls get extremely chapped hands as soon as the weather turns chilly. The salve sold by Old Union Originals is the only thing that seems to help consistently! The same holds true for the lip balm. My girls are already hinting that they hope to receive some in their New Year's stockings!

Since we like to make dolls with natural fibers, we were very interested to find wool roving at Sunrise Pastures (see link). Our introduction to this lovely family afforded us also the occasion to purchase other products such as soap and candles made from sheep tallow. The soap is great and lasts much longer than the bars we usually purchase, and, of course, it is all natural. With eleven people in the house, ten of whom are here all day long, we go through a lot of soap! The prices are excellent! Candles are a sine qua non to cosy winters at home. I was so pleased with the ones I purchased from Sunrise Pastures. They smell great and burn so much longer than others I had been using. Their cute little jars are handy as I have some sconces without candle holders. I just pop these in place and use them! Once again, the prices are incredibly low!

Robert E Lee, A Character Study by H. H. Smith

This 40- page booklet was originally written in the 1900s but has been republished with footnotes, and with an appendix by R. C Dabney.

If you are interested in the Civil War, this booklet is well worth reading. Amongst the quotes by Lee’s contemporaries, one reads " No one since the time of Napoleon, has conquered against such immense odds."

Understand his concern for each soldier and how he lived as they did, lowering himself to their rank yet still having a command over them, in love not only for their physical well-being but even more so for their souls.

Several pages are devoted to specific character traits giving us the much-needed glimpse into Lee’s heart for God, modesty, sympathy; compassion and faith.

It would be well worth it if every young boy who wishes to reach true manhood would read this and study this volume. By the end, each would note how Lee’s faith went with him everywhere.

CONVERSION ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION By Richard Furman, D.D

This was a sermon preached to the Religious Tract Society of Charleston at the First Presbyterian Church on June 10th, 1816.

In the endeavor to deepen our understanding of God’s working in salvation, we must go to Scripture to scrutinize what GOD says about His redemptive work. So often we are swept away by cultural interpretations which lack the Biblical foundation.

This booklet points out what the Bible shows about the conversion of a sinner, as related to passages of the scriptures - “Repent and be converted…”. This author continues in his discourse to show that a change will take place when saved; not a mere turning of the sentiment, or reformation of the manners, but something more.

After proclaiming what it means to be saved into the Kingdom of God, he shares some of the employment the new believer will see as his obligation. We must be ever watchful that we do not lack in piety, charity, mercy, meditation, and prayer for these comprise some of a converted person’s acts of obedience to God.

The author gloriously shows us that we are to be saved from sin, by Christ redeeming us and that nothing we can do has any merit towards salvation. Moving on, Furman proceeds to have each of us observe the errors of the sinner’s way, who offers prayers but his heart is upon and in the world. He also has us examine one who thinks he is righteous and finds fault with others, but is who blind to his own sin. Then thirdly in his points on this topic, Furman has us look at a hypocrite, thus causing us to begin to examine our daily living, with fear and trembling.

Concerning the preaching of the word of God, a very clear-composed account of the beliefs of the pastor is put forth in this drafted document. Therefore we will come away with a better understanding that salvation is committed into the hands of men to be preached, but that the fruit is of the Lord.

John Brown, An American Terrorist by John Allan Wyeth

As I read this 60-page booklet I was astounded at the vivid descriptions of the deaths in this writing, so much so that I would highly recommend only adults read this. Indeed, this book is well-written and the evil murders in their clear descriptive form are needed for the book to be accurate; yet it is not for children to read. We adults, however, must understand a portion of history which has been mistreated.

The publisher’s introduction introduces us to a definition of “terrorist”. John Brown believed that there was but one wrong in the world, and that was slavery. Then follows the account of his terrorist activities, which included 22 murders. You may be surprised to learn how Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were an integral part of Brown’s terrorist cell.

The reason we have Brown portrayed today as a hero is because so many believe that the end justifies the means, but can a thief and murderer be claimed righteous?

Other men, such as Dr.Howe, committed themselves in aiding Brown to break the law, by supplying guns and money so that he could violate the law of God, which says, “ Thou shalt not murder”. Thus in this chapter we learn of the men who would stand with Brown yet who were not fully convinced of the wisdom of the scheme. “Meet” Nat Turner, a well-treated slave who lead a rebellion and killed his master and the family in a gruesome manner.

The history of John Brown’s life and how he failed in all his vocations is quite interesting, showing him as the liar and thief that he was. Over and over, men realized that Brown lied about his life, his deeds, and what he did in general, so that many distrusted him. Even some of his sons followed him into his wicked plot where unarmed victims were cruelly destroyed.

In the end, read of Brown’s trial where men saw him as “a poor man with a helpless family, a man who had lost three sons and a son-in-law and was… to be murdered by slave-owners, and all because he had tried to free the slaves.” So darkened was the mind of the people that they sought to make him a martyr and some kind of savior.

Jefferson Davis, The Unreconstructed by Dr. H. Rondel Rumburg 66 page paperback book.

Once, in the past, I had read how Jefferson Davis was a true Christian but had never found any more information except that, to the contrary, he was mean to his slaves and cold-hearted. However, after reading this volume I have no doubt that Lee, Jackson and Davis were the Southern heroes of the war!

The verse, " In all affliction he was afflicted and the angel of His presence saved them" ( Isaiah 63 :9) is inscribed in Davis’ Bible, and opens this short work by R. Rumburg, which reveals Davis’ faith in God.

Through this volume you will come to admire Davis, who stood on the principles of God, and you will be amazed by his strong faith during such a hard time as the Civil War. You will understand that, although he was treated poorly by the North, and even by some in the South, and was made a scapegoat, Davis held convictions concerning the Bible and the Constitution that would not allow him to compromise nor to admit that the course of the South was wrong.

All through his life, his Bible and prayer book were his companions even when he was imprisoned for two years after the war. You will be struck with his remarkable faith even to the point of forgiving his enemies, even if he was never given a trial, thus becoming "a man without a country."

This book, full of quotes by Davis’ contemporaries, is well worth reading, and owning, to understand the heart of the south and of the “lost America.”

Well-written and giving a clear picture of Davis, this book provides new insight into this misrepresented leader’s walk with God.
